Commercial solar vacuum tube

Vacuum tubes are very resistant to electrical abuse. When pushed outside their safe operating area, most transistors will be destroyed almost instantly. Tubes can dissipate many times their rating for short periods of time with no ill-effects.

Also, semiconductors are still fairly limited in their voltage capabilities. When it comes to switching voltages in excess oover 5kV, vacuum tubes really start to shine.
